To make his latest printmaking project Mathias Malling Mortensen formed his compositions using paper cut-outs. However, rather than using the paper cut-outs, as he would usually do Mathias Malling Mortensen used the negative space instead of the cut-out shape. Those perforated papers were transformed by the artist into stencils.
With the help of Printer's Proof's Master Printer and the use of several aquatint plates and colours Mathias Malling Mortensen built his compositions printing more colour plates on top of each other. Each time masking a different area of the plate with the paper stencil Mathias Malling Mortensen would freely combine form, texture and colour.
The result is a series of dynamic compositions characterised by vibrant colours where the overlapping of abstract shapes and bright colours form playful works that are built on the tension between a finished work and an ongoing experimentation.
