Julie Sass

Julie Sass' painterly work consists of overlaying partially transparent layers with geometric shapes. The interplay between these shapes is also at the core of her exploration of copperplate printing, where she creates the transparent layers using various etching techniques.

Shifts in color and texture are crucial elements in her artistic universe, where the primary focus is space, substance, and materiality. When art critic Peter Michael Hornung described her practice, he called it a process in which images are "built up." Indeed, her graphic work can be seen as a construction, where each new element in the composition organically leads to the next.

By playing with composition and altering the tactile qualities of the elements, she gives the works a sense of being in a constant state of flux. The balance she achieves feels momentary—and yet, she succeeds in creating a deep sense of harmony. Her etchings can thus be viewed as a form of architecture, where every single element is essential to the overall balance of the piece. It is precisely this fragile equilibrium that becomes the central focal point in the encounter between the viewer and the artwork.
