Birk Bjørlo

Birk Bjørlo

Birk Bjørlo is renowned for his large-scale formats and distinct color palette. He constructs his abstract compositions in layers, sustaining a fluid process of continuous addition and subtraction. Through this method, Bjørlo creates an inner landscape - a meditative sanctuary designed to offer a moment of contemplation in a world moving at the speed of light. As the artist explains, his work thrives within the tension between control and chaos, an intentional surrender where he allows the uncontrollable to take over.

Bjørlo views his series of etchings as a form of X-ray of his abstract paintings. This parallel is evoked not only by the chromatic scale—with the works on paper printed in a blend of black and silver—but also through his choice of medium. Utilizing the soap-ground aquatint technique, Bjørlo mirrors his painterly practice of adding and removing material, granting the viewer a rare glimpse into his creative process.

These graphic works invite the viewer to submerge themselves in a primordial world of organic molecules and bacteria, existing long before humanity. Algae, minerals, winding streams, vast oceans, and cellular formations serve as the primary inspirations for these abstract compositions. By drawing directly from the realm of natural matter, Bjørlo bypasses the need for a singular focal point. Instead, the eye wanders freely across the composition, navigating between the luminous highlights offered by the pristine white Somerset paper and the deep, etched grayscales that draw us into the darkest recesses of the work.
