Alexander Tillegreen

Alexander Tillegreen is a visual artist and composer whose practice revolves around a dynamic exchange of ideas across disciplines. His work spans painting, sound installations, sculpture, printmaking, and music, with sound serving as the central focal point. Music theory and the voice permeate his entire production, where he explores the interactive dimension of sound and its ability to create immersive experiences.

A central inquiry in his practice is his fascination with the phantom word illusion, which sheds light on how the human brain perceives and interprets sound waves based on the listener's linguistic and cultural background. Research shows that the auditory experience often deviates from objective reality. By utilizing this knowledge, Alexander Tillegreen creates situations that highlight shifts in perception, activate the imagination, and evoke personal and collective memories – triggered by the illusory sensation of inner streams of words that are not necessarily acoustically present.

In his recent works, Alexander Tillegreen expands the audience's sensory field by exploring the connections between sound, architecture, and visual art, thereby awakening the listener's cultural situationality. Sonic impressions also play a central role in his painterly and graphic works, where themes such as rhythm and musical thinking serve as the focal points. An example of this is his first printmaking project with Printer's Proof, where he created a series of aquatint etchings that move between the abstract and the figurative, exploring the idea of space and sound evolving into a form of graphic score.
