Valérie Collart

Valérie Collart

In her artistic practice, Valérie Collart explores the complex relationship between sculpture and photography. She challenges the boundaries between the two media, creating an ambivalence that begs the question: Is her practice image- or object-based?

In the series Ruins, Valérie Collart merges the two-dimensionality of photographic documentation with the three-dimensionality of sculpture through photogravure. Here, she produced small objects for the sole purpose of making them subjects for her photographic work. By transforming the digital photo files into large photogravures, she used the printmaking medium to evoke the cultural memory of early modern world monumentality.

Valérie Collart's work is part of the postmodern fascination with the archaic. She utilizes digital virtuality to reconstruct the figurative, where figure and substance seem to dissolve. Her pseudo-archaic columns function as a dual reference: to the past, and simultaneously to the energy of transformation, visualizing what the future may hold.
