We are pleased to highlight the upcoming solo show by acclaimed contemporary artist Morten Schelde. His highly anticipated exhibition, NIGHT SHIPS – Grafik 1992–2026, opens at Kastrupgårdsamlingen on October 8, 2026, and runs through January 31, 2027.
This exhibition offers an in-depth retrospective of his extensive work in the graphic medium, providing a unique look into a technical expertise that has deepened over three decades. Over the past 30 years, Schelde has refined his practice at some of Denmark's most esteemed graphic workshops, a focused dedication that has established him as a highly respected figure in both Danish and international printmaking.
The departing point for Morten Schelde’s artistic universe is the world around him. Just like in his drawings and paintings, his graphic work relies on mixing these everyday impressions with surreal, imaginary elements and fiction. Merged together, they build an artistic cosmos resting entirely on the tension between these different worlds. In his pieces, Schelde beautifully blurs fiction and reality, the familiar and the foreign, creating convincing, detailed universes that invite the viewer into a world infused with mystery and melancholy.
Within these spaces, his signature motifs—such as empty interiors, winding staircases, open doors, flying ships, and dense forests—all carry an understated dramatic tension where the narrative remains completely open to the interpretation of the viewer. This sense of the surreal is further heightened by Schelde’s characteristic monochrome palette. The exhibition at Kastrupgårdsamlingen provides an insight into Morten Schelde's striking ability to transform the everyday into a dreamlike image.
